Post-Doctoral Training Program

If you’re currently in your internship year of a doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology, and you’re looking for a post-doctoral opportunity in private practice, we’d love to connect!

Company Overview:

Stepping Stone Therapy is a private practice that was founded on the principle that private practice can play an important role in serving the community while at the same time providing a good monetary return for clinicians and staff. Since our beginning, we’ve been in multiple health insurance networks to allow mental healthcare – assessments and therapy – to be available to more people who might not be able to afford to pay $200 a session out of pocket.

We know private practice can seem overwhelming and risky for many clinicians, and we believe we have created an environment that offers a perfect way to transition to private practice with minimal risk. We provide all our clinicians with access to furnished office space, our strong flow of referrals, administrative support including new client scheduling and insurance verification, all record keeping and client communication systems, and more!

We hire clinical/counseling psychologists, Licensed Psychological Associates, and individuals who are on the path to those careers. From the interviews all the way through orientation, we hope to give you a feel for how welcoming and supportive our group is. We hire people with warm personalities, who work hard to serve clients effectively and also want to support and connect with their fellow clinicians.

We treat all our staff and clinicians with respect and strive to create an environment where you’ll meet other awesome people. We also treat all clients with respect, and do not discriminate on any factors of client identity, and of course that’s what we want from you as well.

Postdoctoral Training at Stepping Stone Therapy:

We’ve been a training site for 6 years, and here are some of the opportunities you’ll have:

  1. Learn how to effectively apply your clinical skills. Sure, graduate school and internships taught you how to interpret assessment reports and to conduct therapy, but here you’ll learn customer service skills, how to REALLY write an evaluation, and how to build a good therapeutic relationship.
  2. Learn about the operation of a private practice. If you think you want to run your own private practice in the future, we’ll make sure you get training and visibility to the behind-the-scenes work that we do.
  3. Opportunities to keep working with us once you’re licensed! We love finding postdocs who are a great fit for our practice and want to stick around after completing postdoc and getting licensed. You’ll make more, and still have plenty of opportunity for consultation as you continue with us.
  4. Do you want to hone your supervisory skills? Guess what?!? We have practicum students who would love to engage with you and learn from your experiences.
  5. And last, but definitely not least, you’ll be treated as an important and integral part of our practice. You’ll build up to a full schedule the same way an experienced hire would. You’ll be a part of all our practice communications and meetings! You’ll have the chance to implement project ideas you have for groups, assessment, relationship workshops, etc.

You’re not just here to do the grunt work, while everyone else does all the cool psychology stuff. We want to help you build a practice that you’re excited about and is tailored to your career goals. You’ll have a say in the type of clients you see and services you offer (though we encourage you to try new stuff), you only have to be at the site if you’re seeing clients in-person (virtual days are a great option!), and most of our clinicians work 4 days! Talk about work-life balance!

Some important specifics to know:

  • We ask that you provide an average of 22 hours of billable clinical work per week. Billable hours include clinical appointments as well as assessment scoring and report writing.
  • Work either a few mornings, evenings, or a weekend day each week. This really helps build up your caseload quickly and keep you full!
  • Attend individual supervision, group supervision, case consultation meetings, and any other trainings/meetings organized by the training team. These trainings and consultations are a great opportunity to get to know your peers and to hear ideas in a judgment free environment.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Compensation is based on a percentage of income received for clinical services (typically above average for postdoctoral positions)
  • Flexible schedules and time off
  • We’ll pay up to $750 towards preparation of EPPP (online programs, coaching, etc.)
  • Health insurance plans available

While applicants from APA-accredited programs are preferred, we promise to give all applicants a fair shot and to actively not discriminate based on any non-clinical/training attributes or identities. All are welcome! We look forward to hearing from you!

To apply, please email cover letter (as PDF attachment), updated CV (as PDF attachment), and contact information for three professional references to clevinger@steppingstonetherapy.org. You can also apply via the APPA CAS portal managed by APPIC. In your cover letter, please include the date you complete your internship, the date of your graduation, and the date you are available to start work. We typically start our post-doctoral program yearly in late August/early September, but we may have some flexibility on this depending on the situation.
