Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few answers to frequent questions that we get. If you have additional questions that aren’t covered here, please feel free to contact us anytime!

  • How do I schedule an appointment?
    • Whatever way you’re most comfortable with! We get that phone calls aren’t for everyone. Feel free to call or text us at 281-993-8040, fill out our contact form on the website, or email info@steppingstonetherapy.org.
  • Can I schedule an appointment for someone else?
    • If you are the parent or guardian of someone under 18 and you’re calling to schedule for them, you can definitely schedule an appointment! The only exception to this is if you do not have custody or medical decision making rights, we will be unable to schedule with you.
    • In addition, if the individual you’re trying to schedule for is over the age of 18, due to HIPAA privacy regulations, they will have to schedule their own appointment. This does include your spouse or your adult child.
  • How does the process work if I’m scheduling an appointment for my child?
    • If your child is under the age of 18, the first appointment will be a parent consultation. This will be an appointment for you with the psychologist, without your child present. This gives you time to get to know the psychologist, give a thorough history of your child’s life, and ask any questions you have.
    • If multiple parents would like to schedule parent consultation appointments and are unable to attend the same appointment, please let your therapist know and they can set up a separate appointment with the other parent. We encourage all parents/guardians to meet with the therapist for parent consultations if possible for the best possible therapy outcome.
    • Subsequent sessions will then be with your child.
  • How long are sessions?
    • For therapy, sessions will be approximately 45-55 minutes long. For assessment appointments, the time will vary depending on the tests being administered.
  • Do you accept insurance?
  • How much will it cost if I have insurance?
    • That depends! Your insurance plan and coverage will determine your out of pocket cost for each session. We can’t give you this information without knowing your specific coverage, as the answer depends on your copays, co-insurance amounts, and deductible. We will attempt to verify your coverage and benefits prior to your initial session and let you know what our best estimate of your cost is. We also encourage you to call your insurance company and ask about your out of pocket costs for the following CPT codes: 90971 (intake session) and 90837 (therapy session.)
  • How do virtual appointments work?
    • After you set up your initial appointment, our scheduler will text you a link to set up the Spruce app on your smartphone or tablet. You’ll need to click on the link directly from that text. Just follow the instructions and let us know if you have any questions. (It should only take a minute and it’s a pretty easy process!) Make sure you allow notifications from the app so that you’ll be notified when your therapist calls.
    • At the time of your appointment, your therapist will call you via the Spruce app. You may need to open up the Spruce app at the time of the appointment for it to work correctly. Once you answer, it will be a video call very similar to a Facetime call. Please make sure you’re in a private location with good wi-fi signal.
    • That’s it! It can sound a little strange at first but after trying it, most people love it!
  • How can I contact my therapist?
    • You are welcome to contact your therapist via phone (281-993-8040), text (281-993-8040), or email. Each therapist’s email address is their last name @steppingstonetherapy.org. (i.e. Wolfe@steppingstonetherapy.org).
    • Please be aware that many of our psychologists work part time and are not available every day. If it’s an emergency, please call 911 or a local crisis line.
    • If you are contacting them in order to cancel, schedule, or reschedule an appointment, don’t forget about the patient portal! You can use this anytime to view, schedule, or change upcoming appointments.
  • What kind of testing do you do?
  • Can you prescribe medication?
    • No, we cannot! You’re probably looking for a psychiatrist. As psychologists, we only provide therapy and evaluation services.
