Mary Kate Becnel

Intern

Mary Kate (she/her) is a counseling student who is dedicated to helping adolescents
and adults navigate life transitions and difficulties including chronic illness, trauma,
depression and anxiety and is passionate about providing affirming care to the
LGBTQIA+ community. Mary Kate earned her Master’s degree in music from Sam
Houston State University and has worked as a board certified music therapist for nine
years in a variety of healthcare settings including inpatient behavioral health, pediatric
intensive care and adult oncology. She is now pursuing a second Master’s degree in
Clinical Mental Health Counseling with plans of incorporating music therapy and
creative approaches into her counseling practice as well.
Mary Kate strives to create a therapeutic environment in counseling sessions, grounded
in acceptance and inclusion. She views therapy as a collaborative process and
integrates Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy approaches
while prioritizing an individualized approach to each client.
