2025 New Year’s Resolutions

By Dr. Elil Yuvarajan

Resolutions Start Failing in January!

The start of a new year is exciting! The holidays are over, and we hope this year will be better. The band Counting Crows said it best – “Long December and there’s reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last.” Many people make New Year’s resolutions like losing weight, stopping smoking, or saving money.

By now, some people are having trouble keeping their goals. The excitement of making a plan can get hard when you have to make real-life changes. You might feel bad about yourself if you don’t do everything perfectly, and not achieving 100% can lead to giving up.

Let’s say you ate a dessert you didn’t want to eat or smoked one cigarette. Your brain might tell you that you failed. But that’s not true! Making changes is never a straight path, and there’s a process of experimentation we all go through.

Failure will beat the loser. Failure will inspire the winner.

You Are Not A Failure!

You are NOT a failure just because you didn’t do everything perfectly. Sometimes people compare themselves to others who seem to be doing better, especially when so many people on Instagram and TikTok show us the time they succeeded. But everyone’s journey is different and never straightforward.

Instead of feeling ashamed, try to be curious.

Ask yourself:

– What made it hard to stick to my goal?

– What can I learn from this?

– How can I try again?

Every Small Step Counts!

Feeling bad about yourself makes you want to give up. Being curious can help you find a new way to reach your goal.

Remember, every small step counts! Even if you’re not 100%, you’re farther than you were before.

Small steps lead to big change. Change your life one step at a time.
